The ERC grant - StG

ERC Starting Grants (StG) are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team. PIs must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.

ERC encourages proposals that cross disciplinary boundaries, present pioneering ideas that address new and emerging fields or applications, as well as introduce unconventional and innovative approaches.

Eligibility

The Principal Investigator shall have been awarded their first PhD at least 2 and up to 7 years prior to 1 January 2021. Extensions to this eligibility window include maternity and paternity leave, clinical specialization, and long-term illnesses.

A competitive PI must have already shown the potential for research independence and evidence of maturity and should also be able to demonstrate a promising track record of early achievements appropriate to their research field and career stage.

Funding

Funding per grant: up to 1 500 000 EUR
Duration: 5 years

An additional 1 000 000 EUR can be requested for eligible start-up costs such as the purchase of major equipment, access to large facilities, and/or other major experimental expenses. The grant covers 100 % of eligible costs.
