Visiting PhD student from Spain

Francisco Romero Gavilán from Universitat Jaume I in Spain joined our group for three months to learn more about protein adsorption on biomaterials.

Meet our visiting PhD student Francisco

I am a PhD candidate at the University Jaume I in Castellón, Spain, and my university granted me an opportunity for a research stay at the Department of Biomaterials at University of Oslo. During my PhD studies, I have done research on the deposition of proteins onto different types of biomaterials through proteomics, aiming to develop a new in vitro methodology to predict the in vivo outcome of biomaterials. Additionally, we work on the development of hybrid silica sol-gel surface treatments to improve the osseointegration of dental implants.

What has he learned during his stay in Oslo?

My project at the Department of Biomaterials has focused on the study of protein-biomaterial interactions using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). The Department of Biomaterials has a very well-equipped laboratory, which allowed me the chance to also gain knowledge in the use of different complimentary characterisation techniques. Furthermore, excellent researchers at the department create a perfect atmosphere to improve your skills in the biomaterial field. At a more personal level, the lab has a nice multicultural environment, and also, quite interesting cake rules.
