We are thrilled to announce that the UiO Core Facilities Advisory Board has approved our "UiO:NEXT Norwegian Center for Nanoscale X-ray Tomography" to become a UiO Core Facility. This recognition is based on the unique technology offering that our centre provides.

At UiO:NEXT, we are dedicated to creating more value for UiO through increased publications and improved technology that grants researchers easier access to advanced storage-demanding equipment and analyses (VDI).

The added value for the environment at OD includes greater visibility and recognition, not only for our researchers internally but also externally, showcasing the various opportunities this technology presents. We also believe in the importance of bringing together the existing X-ray imaging communities within UiO to enhance users' skills and provide providers with opportunities to develop new methods.

X-ray imaging is a rapidly developing field with diverse applications in natural sciences, production industries (such as food and marine industries), and beyond. Recent technological advancements have made these techniques more user-friendly and relevant to a wide range of fields. Access to cutting-edge X-ray imaging capabilities is vital for maintaining Norwegian competitiveness.

Across the country, a growing number of X-ray computed tomography (CT) instruments are being utilised in universities and industries. These instruments are indispensable for various research and production purposes. Therefore, developing and maintaining state-of-the-art X-ray imaging capabilities are crucial to stay at the forefront of scientific progress. In recent years, significant progress has been made in in-house X-ray tomography setups, including the use of new image contrast mechanisms, fast acquisition/time-resolved experimental setups, and high spatial resolution techniques for soft or small samples. Moreover, new developments in data acquisition, image processing, and analysis enable time-resolved and in situ/in operando studies.

Despite being smaller than similar facilities worldwide, OD has been proactive in staying updated with techniques like phase contrast and chemical staining to improve X-ray contrast. "We are proud to be a partner and the UiO coordinator for the EU Horizon Europe INFRAIA project 'EXCITE,' we are currently applying for an extension of this project in 'EXCITE II.' We are also applying for RCN Infrastructure call with our other Norwegian partners." says Dean of Research Janne E Reseland.

Exciting plans are also in motion as OD, in collaboration with NTNU, is organising an international meeting on X-ray imaging scheduled for April 2024. This meeting will provide a platform for experts to share the latest advancements in in-house X-ray tomography setups, including various image contrast mechanisms, fast acquisition/time-resolved experiments, and high spatial resolution techniques.

UiO:NEXT, although more minor in scale, remains committed to staying at the forefront of technology by continually updating our techniques, such as phase contrast and chemical staining, to enhance X-ray contrast. We are dedicated to providing Norwegian scientists within UiO and industries access to state-of-the-art X-ray imaging capabilities and expertise. Our team, led by Professor Janne E. Reseland, alongside the Facility Manager Dr. Liebert P. Nogueira is passionate about delivering high-quality imaging capabilities and expertise to researchers and industries across Norway.
