The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and societal development. Not only a growing number of infections are becoming harder to treat as pathogenic microbes develop or acquire resistance to antibiotics, but also several modern medical treatments such as Caesarian sections, organ transplantation, immunosuppressive chemotherapy, and implant insertions are at risk since they depend on the availability of effective antibiotic therapy.

This project addresses the urgent need for improved evidence-based guidance for antibiotic use in newborns, with focus on ecological and molecular properties of antimicrobial resistance, with implications for guidelines and surveillance. We wish in particular to investigate the difference between antibiotic resistance in India and Norway. The project is part of the Born in the twilight programme, funded by the INDNOR programme from the Norwegian Research Council and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

This project addresses the urgent need for new strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance. While antibiotics have saved millions of lives, the worldwide rise in antibiotic resistance give rise to thousands suffering and dying during the first days of life due to resistance of antibiotics. In addition to resistance during early life, antibiotic promote microbiome disruptions that can have life-long consequences, including among other conditions, increased risk of respiratory infections.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the largest threats to human health. To achieve effective responses in tackling the crisis of AMR, collaborative, multidisciplinary efforts of educators, researchers, policy-makers, practitioners and other stakeholders are called upon.
