Immune regulation in atopic dermatitis: the toggle of the tissue by Associate Professor Dr. Edward Knol

Dr. Edward F. Knol is Associate Professor at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC), Departments of Immunology and Dermatology/Allergology, a Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS) Center of Excellence. He has been Board member and chairman of the Immunology section of the EAACI and is on the Steering Committee of FOCIS. His main research focus is on allergies, especially food allergies and eczema, and diagnostics for allergic diseases.

In his lecture Dr. Knol will focus on the immunological mechanisms relevant for atopic dermatitis (AD). It is well known that allergen-specific IgE levels in AD are the highest among all allergic diseases, but their exact role in AD is not clear. This is highlighted by the lack of mast cell degranulation in the skin of AD patients during a flare up. The interplay of immunological players in AD will be discussed underlying a model of multiple hits as well as local versus systemic immune activities.
